Nvidia's new GTX 1070 freezes out Fury, trashes Titan X
The GTX 1070 launched recently, and it's easily the upper-midrange performance leader. Not only does it beat the Titan X, which launched barely a year ago, it demolishes every card from its own price point and previous generation, as well as the Fury products from AMD.

Smart Responsive Design Patterns, Or When Off-Canvas Isn't Good Enough
Design patterns often have a bad reputation. They are often considered to be quick, lazy, off-the-shelf solutions that are applied blindly without consideration of the context of a problem. Solutions such as the almighty off-canvas navigation, the floating label pattern or carousels for featured products are some of the prominent ones.
This article isn't about these patterns, though. This article features some of the slightly more obscure design patterns, such as responsive car-builder interfaces, mega dropdown navigation, content grids, maps and charts, as well as responsive art direction. Please note that this article isn't technical; it explores interesting UX patterns out in the wild, rather than code samples. Beware: You will not be able to unsee what you are about to see, and that's probably a good thing.

The Making Of Melody Jams
After months of hard work, I've finally gotten my side project, Melody Jams, into the App Store. It's been quite the adventure, and I'm thrilled to see it in the store. Seeing it live makes me reflect on the process that got us there: our failures and successes, some of the crazy stuff we figured out and what our hopes and dreams are.
To give you some context, I worked with five other people completely remotely. Most of us still haven't met in real life. In spite of that, we designed, programmed, animated and submitted the app in four months. It works on iPhone 4s through iPhone 6s+ and iPad 2 through iPad Pro. We also tested it with over 30 kids, ranging from nine months to nine years old, in that timeframe.

Web Development Reading List #139: jQuery 3, Web Payment API, And ES6 Tricks
Finding our passion is a big challenge for all of us as human beings. At some point in life, we try to figure out what our purpose in this world is, what our future will look like. And for some of us, the answers we find to these questions are constantly changing.
The constant search to find answers lets us stay curious, creative, vital - and if that's missing, we need to find our passion again by exploring what things we like in our world, what makes us happy. Searching takes time, and we should invest that time - maybe by cutting down watching TV by an hour a week.

Working Remotely Around The World: Workspaces To Explore
If you're a footloose creative soul searching for a more affordable and friendly space than a typical rented or home office, coworking could work for you.
Coworking spaces are popping up in cities all around the world. They allow freelancers, small business owners and independent workers to rent a working area that is shared with others. The setup is usually more casual than the fixed rental agreement you would get in a dedicated office space.

A Guide To Personal Side Projects
Personal side projects are a cornerstone of creative growth and discovery. While they might not always result in financial gain, the long-term benefits are often much more useful. Benefits such as personal growth, creative exploration and generation of professional opportunities are some of the reasons to engage in them.
In this article, we'll explore these benefits, as well as learn how to decide on a project and how to effectively manage our time (using my recently launched project an an example). Finally, for inspiration, we'll look at some great examples of personal projects.

I'm sure you've heard the proverb, “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” probably many times. Its written origin dates back to the 18th century, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was much, much older. And though the work we do has little to do with actual chains, this proverb is every bit as relevant to us.
Remember when Azer Koçulu unpublished more than 250 of his modules from npm (Node Package Manager)? If that name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps this function name will: left-pad
. In case you're still scratching your head wondering what the heck I'm talking about, Azer removed a bunch of functions from the canonical library of reusable Node.js code and, in doing so, brought thousands of projects to their knees, including high-profile ones like Babel and React.

Web Development Reading List #137: The New Let's Encrypt Client And SSH Shortcuts
This week reminded me again of how refreshing attending a conference can be. As mentioned, I was at the beyond tellerrand conference and, apart from meeting new people, I mostly enjoyed the inspiration I got from listening to the great talks.
I realized how I might be able to solve a few things that had led to me being unhappy with my work in the past. My trying-to-change-everything-at-once strategy always failed, and seeing that some people just change small things and succeed, I recognized that this is what I want to try over the next months. And I'm happy that I don't need to do this alone but have some friends who spent nearly the entire Monday night talking with me about how to do more meaningful work.
