Desktop Wallpaper Calendars: September 2015

As designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration, but, well, sometimes the best inspiration lies right in front of us. With that in mind, we embarked on a special creativity mission seven years ago: to provide you with inspiring and unique desktop wallpapers every month. Wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd and that are bound to fuel your ideas.

Desktop Wallpaper Calendars: September 2015

We are very thankful to all artists and designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing to this mission, who challenge their artistic abilities each month anew to keep the steady stream of wallpapers flowing. This post features their artwork for September 2015. Both versions with and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your desktop!

Twitch enforces streaming exclusivity as YouTube Gaming launches

Twitch

With the launch of YouTube Gaming, the battle-lines are drawn for a streaming showdown between incumbent games video powerhouse Twitch and Google's scrappy newcomer.

It's more of a fight to win hearts and minds though -- or at least subscriber numbers -- and Twitch has thrown the first punch, tying its "partners" to exclusivity contracts with the existing platform.

How We Designed And Built Our First Apple Watch App

One sunny morning in the summer of 2014, I was sitting in a café having just finished an hour-long call with my remote team. Scheduling that call had been a messy exercise: we live in different time zones and it was hard to find a time that worked for everyone. I wanted to make dealing with time zone differences less painful.

How We Designed And Built Our First Apple Watch App

I had some free time on my hands, so I pulled my notebook out and started playing around with an iWatch app idea. Yeah, you read that right — 2014 and iWatch, before a watch had ever been announced.

Responsive Upscaling: Large-Screen E-Commerce Design

The responsive design revolution is truly upon us (if it hasn’t already happened!), and even though e-commerce websites haven’t picked up responsive design quite as aggressively as in other industries, it’s becoming increasingly popular.

Responsive Upscaling In E-Commerce

So far, most of the responsive design thinking has revolved around covering the range of experiences from mobile to desktop. Yet little attention has been paid to the opportunities for expanding that range beyond the standard desktop screen, to create an experience optimized for modern large-scale displays.

Disney Infinity 3.0 review: The Force is waning

Another year, another entry for Disney's living toys megalith. The big hook for this third instalment is the arrival of Star Wars characters to the shared universe, with the starter kits being themed around the Clone Wars era.

Along with figures of the youthful Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano, the base set comes with the 'Twilight of the Republic' story pack. It's a decent length adventure in its own right, with a now-familiar blend of linear platform/action gameplay. Ahsoka ultimately feels to have the better range of abilities once you've levelled her up a little, though Anakin can more than hold his own against the forces of General Grievous and Darth Maul.

Web Development Reading List #101

What's happening in the industry? What important techniques have emerged recently? What about new case studies, insights, techniques and tools? Our dear friend Anselm Hannemann is keeping track of everything in the web development reading list so you don't have to. The reaction on the first post last week was quite overwhelming, so we moved from a bi-monthly frequency to a weekly frequency (for now). — Ed.

UI Mechanics of a Date Picker

Welcome back to the Web Development Reading List (WDRL) for this week. Instead of the previously announced biweekly schedule here on Smashing Magazine, I will post it in sync with the original WDRL; so, expect content to appear weekly here from now on.

Borderlands movie in the works from Lionsgate

Not enough post-apocalyptic cinema for your liking? Good news, then -- Lionsgate is planning to bring Gearbox's raucous RPG/FPS hybrid series Borderlands to the big screen.

The game series has been growing in prominence since it debuted as something of a sleeper hit in 2009. Its blend of fast-paced run-and-gun combat, endless loot, and warped sense of humour won it an ardent following, and has since expanded through several shooter sequels and a story-driven episodic adventure spin-off from Telltale Games.

How Bassjackers remixed Steve Aoki's 'Darker Than Blood', from stems to upload

Steve Aoki is one of the world's most influential electro DJs, producers and executives -- so if you're given the job of remixing one of his tracks, you'd better have the skills and the tech to do a good job. And that's doubly true when the track in question happens to feature Linkin Park, latterly transformed into an incredibly influential tech incubator -- as well as, you know, a band. So no pressure, then.

When house DJ titans Bassjackers were given that job recently, with the track 'Darker Than Blood' from Aoki's May 2015 ‘Neon Future II’ album, they simply went to work.
